A once bubbly and bright little sprite, our niece, 3-year old Fiona Kane, is battling
hemolytic uremic syndrome, an uncommon complication of an E. coli infection. Now pale and placid, her damaged red blood cells are clogging the filtering system in her kidneys, which may lead to life-threatening organ failure.

The state’s sixth case this year, she is being treated by the ICU staff at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital an hour’s drive from her family’s Parkview home. She has had one surgery and three dialysis treatments to date. If her sore little body responds well, we can expect her to remain in their care for at least one month. With her condition critical, parents Andrew and Heather Kane will not be working during this time.

Fiona’s Aunt Squad would like to rally funds to support her loved ones as they keep vigil at her side, care for her three older siblings, and cheer her on to reach her daily goals. (Today it was to smile one time!) Donations made to Fight For Fiona will be used to help with out of pocket medical, family travel, and other living expenses.

We want the world to have the pleasure of her smile and hearty giggles...even if they emerge for the most rascally of reasons! We would like to thank you for taking the time to read about our family. Perhaps when she is better, Fiona can help and hand-letter and decorate a thank you note for you.
