Solar Project in Nicaragua

My name is David Holloway and I have recently been given the opportunity to help design, and construct an off-grid solar photovoltaic system for a non-profit farm in the town of Malpaisillo, Nicaragua during the month of June.  As a current renewable energy engineering student with a previous background in solar technology, and having spent three years in Nicaragua I feel that this is a chance to finally use all of my skills to help people on a larger scale of magnitude.  I will be volunteering my time and effort, therefore this is a non-paying job.  The project will take approximately one month, and I am asking to raise $2,000 to help me get down there and cover my expenses for the month I will be gone.

The non-profit farm was established by Steve Jacoby, who's aim is to provide work opportunities, food, and educational training to the local community of Malpaisillo.  The link to the farm can be found at:

The purpose behind the solar photovoltaic system is to provide a sustainable and renewable source of energy to power the expanding fish aquaponics system located on the farm.  The fish provide a great source of protein for the community, and the water from the tanks is circulated through the other crops providing a nutrient rich fertilizer.  The pumps that circulate this water require a lot of power, and the solar photovoltaic system will provide the energy to drive those pumps.

I spent three years working in Gigante, Nicaragua during my early 20’s as a boatman/guide, and experienced first hand the struggles of day to day living.  I also experienced the love and culture of the people there; which has changed the way I view the world today.

One of my goals has always been to return to Nicaragua and help the people who were responsible for helping me grow during a very important stage of my life.  I am thankful for any support that I get, and I hope that you understand the end result of your contribution.  It's not for me, it's for others who truly want and need the help.
