Keya's Global Glimpse

Hi, my name is Keya! I am a junior at Dougherty Valley High Shool. I live in San Ramon, which some consider a little bubble and though I have learned and experienced a lot in my little bubble, I think it is time for me to experience a little more outside in the real world. Towards the end of 2015, I was offered a chance to go outside of the country to an impoverished country where I can expand my mind, and reach out and help a community in need.

Global Glimpse is an organization that helps hundreds of kids each year discover their full potential and expand their leadership skills. Global Glimpse takes about 20 students from a few high schools each to countries like Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic to gain new skills and knowledge of what happens around the world that people may be blind to. Lucky for me I was one of those fortunate students. During this trip, I will be able to help out in the communities of whichever town I get the pleasure of discovering, I will be able to live like a local in order to understand their daily lives, I will be able to teach an English class to all ages, and many more mind opening, and exciting activities. The reason I want to be able to go on this trip is to discover what the world is like outside of our dear United States bubble, I want to experience the way people live outside of my country and I want to be able to open my mind to new experiences and new ideas everyday.

This chance of a lifetime that I have been so graciously offered is too amazing to pass up. I hope to get a lot of things out of this experience, one is being able to expand my knowledge of other countries. I believe that a successful person is one that has an open mind and has taken in whatever life has given them and has learned from it. I want to be able to experience so many things the world has to offer me and this trip is one that is calling my name. I would also like to expand on my leadership skills; I believe that a successful person knows what they want and how to get it and part of that is being able to be a leader. This trip can offer me an abundance of chances to demonstrate and build on my leadership skills. At least once during this trip, each person gets a day to be the leader. They plan the activites, give speeches, and head all of the events for the day, whether that is teaching the biggest class of students, getting up the earliest to make sure all students are at their assigned posts for the local living day, or leading the students on a hike on the free activity day. I belive that this oppurtunity is something that I cannot pass up, and I would like your help at a chance to expand my wings, get out of my comfort zone, and try new things.  In order to experience this once in a lifetime oppurtunity I need your support in raising funds to cover the expenses  of this trip.
