Kevin's New Home Transition Fund

If you live in the Manor neighborhood in Pacifica, you have probably noticed our friend Kevin but may not know his story! I first met him about five years ago. I would see him with his head down walking across the street in front of my house. Always in sunglasses. I was curious, and one day while talking to my neighbor, he walked by and I had the chance to meet him. I introduced myself and he lifted up his glasses and I saw his bright blue eyes and he smiled! I didn't know he was blind! He shared with me much later that he is always terrified crossing the street because he can't see. While to me he had appeared angry, he was actually just scared and trying to get across quickly. He doesn't use a cane because he has Multiple Sclerosis, which also disrupts balance, so using a cane is too disorienting. He is often smiling through a great deal of pain, physical and emotional.
Over the years he has made friends all along the way from his current house to the Chit Chat Cafe, a trip he makes like clockwork every day. We have all been touched by his pure will to get out and enjoy the day. Many of us have seen the MS progressing and worried and wished we could do more.
A friend and I have taken special interest, especially since we learned he would lose his housing this month. After several months of exploring every possible service, finding so many dead ends, through the help of the Pacifica Resource Center, and his church, we have secured a new home for him. His new room on Rosita Road is nice and clean, with all the amenities he needs and a cafe nearby to walk to. He has been living alone in a run down house that has been cause of great concern to us.
His new home, though very reasonable, costs $800 more per month than his previous home. We have secured the moving costs from PRC, and have created a non profit called Kevin's House to assure his support as his Federal SSI is adjusted.
Personally, my mother had MS, and I was able to care for her. My biggest fear is to be alone and unable to care for myself. Please help us create a secure transition. This is only a six month trial, and we must assure PRC and the kind friend taking him in that the rent is covered. We have no idea how long the SSI will take to be adjusted.
We are here with an open hand asking for your help. If you would like to give him an encouraging card or letter along with your donation, I will have a manilla envelope on my front door at 300 Monterey Road. Just physically this will be a difficult move for him and your kindness means more than you possibly know. Every day I tell him how much the neighbors love him because I can see you smile and wave! Thank you!!
