My friend Kevin Perosino has recently been diagnosed with stage four pancreatic cancer which has already spread to his liver. For those lucky enough to be unfamiliar with such a condition, it is extremely painful and has little to no survival rate.
I got to know Kevin while we were both working as flight instructors and he impressed me from the outset with his dedication to instructing as a career rather than a stepping stone to the more lucrative airlines. Over the years he has trained innumerable students to achieve their dreams of becoming a pilot and has repeatedly proven his desire to help others whenever possible. On one occasion, he actually put aside his entire day’s schedule to fly into the middle of the desert to rescue my student and I who were stranded with a busted plane.
Now it is Kevin who needs our help. His doctors have given him about a year to a year and a half of life with treatment, and already he has trouble getting around his apartment due to chemo fatigue and the barely controlled pain in his chest. Kevin lives with his cat but otherwise has no family on this side of the country, and currently can’t afford in-home help so he is frequently re-hospitalized. Due to his status as an independent contractor he is unable to qualify for California Disability Insurance and is mired in the task of applying for social security benefits. In the meantime he has no source of income to help pay for food, rent or the ever mounting medical bills.
No no one should have to suffer the ravages of cancer, especially not alone. When I was waging my own battle last year I was amazingly lucky to have the love and support of so many friends and family... I’m not certain I could have seen it through otherwise. Please help me help Kevin by donating any amount you can spare towards food, bills, rent and the likely move to Florida. I’ll be here to lend a hand as much as possible but any little bit you can part with will be a huge help.
Also, Kevin’s cat Smokey will need a new home, preferably in San Diego if possible. He has beautiful long grey fur and a very friendly disposition. If anyone has or knows of a good home for him please message me directly with any questions or thoughts.
Thank you all for lending me your time to read this and potentially passing it along. I wish health and happiness for you and those you love.
