Hello, my name is Aaron and I'm asking you all to help my best friend in this life, Kevin. He has a life threatening nasal infection, or ​Invasive Fungal Sinusitis. This will cost him his sight, his hearing, and possibly his life. The surgery exists but we need help to make sure he can get it done in time.

From when I met him, Kevin has always been the life in the room. His quick wit and kind character makes him the bond between us friends, and keeps us all laughing together. He's the sort of person that as a stranger, for weeks you'll smile when remembering the humorous bout you had with him in passing. The kind of person we should all aspire to be to our fellow neighbours.

Kevin spends his days working a more demanding job than most, dealing with irrational people going through self-inflicted hardship and subsequent legal ramifications. The professionalism he keeps while taking it in stride is admirable, but not enviable. The stories he tells of how some people speak to him is appalling, and the toll this takes on his demeanour is visible sometimes yet he keeps smile going through all but the worst days.

Last year, after getting COVID for the 3rd time, he never really recovered. Constantly congested and tired, he assumed it was long COVID and continued on. Earlier this year when it was found it was a fungal infection, which has spread throughout his nasal pathways and into the ears. This sort of infection is life threatening when left alone, and needs urgent medical attention.

As a first attempt, doctors have tried using a non-invasive technique and painful acid washes over the recent weeks to remove the infection. This has left him $4,000 in debt, with insurance refusing the pay for it as by their words he does not "need both eyes or ears".

Yesterday Kevin found out that the treatment did not work. He will need to undergo invasive surgery to have the infection removed, which could lead to disfigurement. If the surgery isn't done, he will likely lose his sight, lose hearing from his right ear, and in many cases with this infection, they lose their life.

The surgery exists and is usually successful. He has a chance to keep living a proper life, but the surgery to do so is upwards of $50,000. Myself and our friends, and the people around him are not in a position to help him.

We do not ask for all of it. We all have our hardships of what life throws at us. But Kevin has it harder than most, while brimming with life and bringing joy to the people around him.

He deserves to continue being a positive part of society, and he can't do that without this surgery.

He deserves so much better.
