My friend, Kevin, lost his vision (previously seeing 20/20) around a year ago at 23 years of age due to a genetic disease called leber hereditary optic neuropathy. This disease currently affects about 4,000 people in America and 1 in every 230,000 worldwide. He is 1 of 7 people in a clinical trial at the University of Vanderbilt. The normal life Kevin was living came to a screeching halt. He is no longer able to drive, get around on his own, cook his own meals, do basic life activities, let alone go to work and supply for himself. To make matters worse, once a month the government tremendously underpays him. He receives $800 a month to live on. He still has rent and other bills (including medical) to pay and after those expenses he has slim to no money. If you know Kevin, you know he was hard to keep up with before this incident. He lived a fast paced life and was always on the go. He worked two jobs- one as a server at a local restaurant and the other at UPS as a package handler. When he wasn’t at work, you could always find him with his friends and you could ALWAYS find him with a smile on his face. Every dollar that you are willing to donate makes it easier on Kevin. Getting food delivered is an example. With him not being able to prepare his own meals, delivery is a primary way to feed himself. A service dog is also another thing on Kevin’s list that is extremely expensive and in no way affordable without financial help.
