Our Dad, Kevin Barton, was recently diagnosed with late stage 3 metastatic colon cancer. Kevin currently lives at home in Zimbabwe with our Mum, Adele, and my sisters Shayle and Carley. I, Shelly, live in the United Kingdom and will be handling and forwarding any donations to home, since GoFundMe is not available in Zimbabwe and Kevin’s treatment costs require foreign currency. This came as a huge shock to our family which began with Kevin being rushed into hospital for emergency surgery in early May. He has just started chemotherapy, and at the end of his treatment, he will need to undergo another surgery.
Given the economic crisis and current trying times in Zimbabwe, this has also come as a financial shock to our family. Kevin had to fly to South Africa to get a PET scan to confirm his diagnosis, because we do not have access to a PET scanner in Zimbabwe. Chances of further trips to South Africa are considered high. He will have eight rounds of chemotherapy, each costing US$4585 and totaling approximately US$40,000. In addition to this, his second surgery is estimated at US$11,000, and it is difficult to say how much the concurrent medication, tests, and scans, will add up to. All of these costs have to be paid in foreign currency, since the inflating and inconsistent currencies being used in Zimbabwe are not internationally viable for imported medication, nor accepted as payment for medical procedures and surgeries in Zimbabwe. We have very limited access to foreign currency and we are therefore unable to even closely meet the extent of these inevitable costs.
