Our mom, Kerry McDermott, passed away on Thursday, January 18. She was a radiant and enthusiastic person who cared endlessly about us and about various societal issues. Our mom was a very generous person. Across our lives, we watched her take care of many friends and even our own friends as if they were family, and witnessed her support strangers in the same regard. Despite how many challenging experiences she endured in her brief 52 years on this earth, she demonstrated resilience that would be impossible for others to master. She remained hopeful in dire circumstances in which others certainly would have completely given up. Her sense of humor, intelligence, and loving nature were not just blessings bestowed upon those in her personal life, but also touched many youth whom she worked with in group homes and juvenile detention centers, as well as adults on rape crisis hotlines that she volunteered for. She could brighten anyone’s day with her energy and infectious smile and laughter.
Given that we were not expecting this to happen so suddenly and that we don’t really have much familial support on our maternal side, we would appreciate anything that you could offer to help make it a bit easier on us at this time. We are asking for this to support costs for her cremation, purchasing an urn, and to travel to and from Connecticut to sort through and collect her belongings. Anything that you are able to contribute is beyond appreciated, even generosity in the form of words and thoughts. Our mom would pray for us, others, and the world, and surely she would appreciate a moment of prayer from you.
