Kerri's Homegoing

Kerri D. Mellerson was born on March 23, 2007 at Parkway Regional Hospital. At three days old, Kerri’s pediatrician noticed an abnormality in her heart. She was air lifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where she was diagnosed with hypoplastic left heart syndrome. Hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) is a birth defect where the left side of the heart does not form correctly and affects normal blood flow through the heart. Four days later, Kerri had her first successful open-heart surgery.

Throughout her childhood, Kerri endured four more open-heart surgeries, including a reversal procedure to undo her last surgery due to her poor response. As the years passed, she was maintained with medications and a series of cardiac catheterizations. During these challenges, Kerri, our Diva, was a sweet, sassy little girl with an outrageous personality. She continued to enjoy life with her friends and family and finally had the opportunity to attend school in a normal learning environment at New Renaissance Middle School in 2018.

In early 2020, Kerri was finally placed on the Heart Transplant List at Jackson Memorial Hospital as her heart began to fail. After several admissions throughout the year, the final battle ended on July 10th, as Jesus called her home to stop the pain and suffering. We know Kerri is in Heaven breathing with ease with a heart that’s beating forcefully.

Although Kerri didn’t live on this earth for many years, she deeply touched the hearts of those who knew her.
