Keoni James Pangelinan Wong Medical Fundraiser

Hafa Adai family and friends! As most of you are aware, our son, grandson, and brother, Keoni James Pangelinan Wong was involved in a 3-party, motor vehicle/motorcycle accident on his way home Saturday, August 20, 2022. He was rushed to the Guam Memorial Hospital (GMH) where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit for treatment of injuries sustained from the crash. Keoni was sedated, intubated, unconscious and unresponsive for two weeks. He has since gained consciousness and is currently at GMH, however he is still unable to walk, talk, eat thru his mouth, or control his movements and has been diagnosed with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Doctors and specialists, both on island and off island, have stated that there is a high possibility of recovery should we transfer him to a rehabilitation facility which focuses on the treatment of patients with TBI. As we have no such facility here in Guam, we would need to transfer him to an off island facility. Unfortunately, even with enrollment in two medical insurance plans, the costs associated with his medical expenses is extremely significant in nature. We are working with an amazing social worker at GMH who has identified 2 rehab facilities; the Texas NeuroRehab in Austin, Texas and the Rehab of the Pacific in Honolulu, Hawaii. Sadly, we have been told by one insurance company that they will not cover air transport to the US and the other insurance company will only pay on a reimbursement basis as they are considered the “secondary” insurance and only if they deem it “medically necessary.”As Keoni must be transported on a stretcher, the estimated cost to HI is $20K. Air transport to TX is significantly higher as the only means of transport is via air ambulance due to the inability of a commercial airlines to transport a stretcher patient from HI to any of the continental states; estimated cost for air ambulance is $165K. Once at the facility, we have been told by the insurance companies that we must pay upfront and seek reimbursement. We humbly ask for your kind contribution and most especially your prayers for our son, grandson, and brother.

For those of you who know Keoni, we hope you agree with us when we say he is one of the most loving, caring, strongest, and selfless individuals in this world; he would give everything and anything he could to help his family and friends, to help a patient in his capacity as an Emergency Tech at the Guam Regional Medical Center, to help his Soldiers and Leaders in his capacity as a Non-Commissioned Officer and Flight Medic assigned to the Aviation unit in the Guam Army National Guard, and to his team/co-workers at the Guam Memorial Hospital. He is a fighter and we truly believe that thru our faith in God and with all the continued love, support, and prayers from so many around the world, Keoni will rise above this challenge. Please know that any and all donations made will be used to help mitigate the financial costs incurred as he continues to remain under hospital care, plus all costs associated with his air transport, lodging, and medical costs for his recovery which we have been told by doctors that recovery time necessary once started at the rehab facility is a minimum 6months.
