I'm so excited to share that I'm using my Starbucks 20th anniversary points to travel to Kenya!

This fall I'll be visiting the Furaha Community center in the Huruma slums, Nairobi, Kenya with a non-profit organization called When I Grow Up . I'll be able see first hand how talented, local people are working to eliminate extreme poverty in our generation. As just one partner, I didn't know if I could make a difference tackling something as BIG as exteme poverty? People living on less than $1.25 a day and trying to provide their children with a safe place to live, nutrition, healthcare, much less an education. With the help of a couple partners we started collecting loose change. If you fill a grande cup with mixed change that's about $40, with Starbucks partner match that doubles to $80. When we collected our Change 4 Change we had raised $9000! That was enough to provide meals for four months to 450 school children or cover 3 teacher's salaries for a year. With $50,000 Furaha could buy a bus, then lease their bus to a local bus cooperative who would operate it and give Furaha a share of profit. Estimates are this could create between $1,500 - $2,500 profit per month of sustainable income to empower children out of poverty.
