Hello, I am a junior at Kentridge High in Kent Washington. We at kentridge follow a motto that has been the aspiration and goal for all students and staff, to show kindness pride and responsibility, now for the past three years that I have attended this school, staffed with teachers who take deep consideration of the success of their students. I have noticed that everyone is always in a rush that at the drop of a hat we will get up and hurry to wherever else we are needed but we don’t always clean up after ourselves. This is where our schools custodian comes in to maintain the sanitation of the school, Mr.Lai , I’ve seen as he cleans up our lunch room after every lunch and towards the end of the day he not only does his job at keeping our facility in pristine condition he goes above and beyond by spreading an unconditional positive attitude to students and other staff members. On multiple occasions he has helped students retrieve items forgotten in class after school hours, Although he is of very soft spoken I have gotten the privilege to thank him everyday for everything he has done and share some small talk in the brief moment of time I have before running off to class.Today however after winter break Mr.Lai informed me on how he was transferred to the emergency room due to a tumor that was found in his head. As he told me what had happened I asked him a simple question. “Why are you not at home relaxing though?” I said still a bit speechless by the situation and he replied “i need to make the money” he said with a smile. for the past three years Lai has been fist bumping students and spreading a light of positivity that is contagious throughout the school but that despite his situation he shows up to work with a smile on his face. I just wanted to find a way to thank him after years of going unthanked.
