My father, Kenneth Wayne Kirkland Sr., was a remarkable man whose journey was shaped by resilience, hard work, and a deep belief in the power of education. He made the difficult decision to leave high school during his senior year when I was born, choosing to support our family. Despite this early setback, he never stopped learning. He apprenticed as a machinist, earned his GED, and even taught himself trigonometry to solve challenges at work. Throughout his life, he showed our family and others that real power lies in books and knowledge, and he inspired everyone around him to keep growing and striving for more.

To honor his legacy, I am raising funds to endow a scholarship at Calhoun Community College. This scholarship will be awarded to an adult education graduate who has completed their GED and is pursuing a career in a technical education field of their choice. My hope is that this opportunity will help open doors for someone determined to transform their future, just as my father did, and help break the cycle of generational poverty.

All funds raised will be donated to this scholarship fund through a gift to the Calhoun Community College Foundation.
