Kenko TSF failure in Bolivia

Donation protected
On March 16, 2025, at approximately 5:00 a.m., a catastrophic event occurred in the community of Andavilque, located in the Llallagua district of Potosí, Bolivia. Following intense rainfall, a tailings dam in the Kenko Lagoon area suffered a major collapse, unleashing a mudslide that devastated the community. The disaster resulted in the confirmed deaths of two people, several missing individuals, and the destruction of 47 homes. Five hundred heads of livestock were confirmed missing, and it is estimated that more than 50 kilometres downstream of the TSF were affected.
The area is a historic/abandoned mining district and remains under the responsibility of the local national mining government body. Local news have described the event as a "natural disaster" and it is unlikely that the failure will be studied with the rigor known for this kind of event in other geographies.
The failure has been recorded in the following link:

The funds raised will be used to support a local Bolivian student, Danilo Torrico, who is pursuing an MSc degree at the Pontifical University of San Francisco. Danilo is a Geotechnical Engineer and volunteers as a local fire fighter. Danilo would like this failure to get documented properly and to not go unnoticed by the international community.
Danilo's MSc project will focus on characterising this failure. The money will be used to purchase satellite information. If funds and time allow, it will also support a site visit to inspect and recover tailings samples. Tuition and living expenses are self funded. The data recovered and generated will be made publicly available. If funds remain after the MSc project is completed, they will be donated to a local charity to support the affected community.
