Kendra's Safety in Central America
Donation protected
Over 18 years ago, 4 different but similar children wandered into an afternoon drop-in center, called Dorchester Youth Collaborative (DYC); each for a different reason, but were all united by one youth counselor, Kendra. The bond with Kendra was almost instant. Regardless of her many other responsibilities, she always made time for us.
We knew that Kendra was a strong, passionate and inspiring person who constantly stands up for and believes highly in freedom, peace and justice. She cared for us all like we were her very own children. Even Mama Hoyt, Kendra’s Mom, knew of us and used to make us these homemade chocolate chip cookies that we would always beg for.
Out of all the counselors, Kendra was the one constant in our lives. She always showered us with an abundance of love and support and she played a major role in making sure we stayed in a positive direction growing up from pre-teen, to teenage, to young adults to now grown men and women. We have always been known as Kendra’s children. When she used to take us out and claim us as her own children, people were often confused due to the various races that were represented, (White, Black, Latino and Asian). People sometimes did not know the value she instilled in us, but hopefully the pictures through all the various occasions illustrate some of that.
Ever since knowing Kendra, it was clear her path in the United States was limited. She craved to live outside of the US and traveled often to various places around the world! More recently, Kendra moved with her two kids and husband down to Central America. Although the location has nice views and year round warm weather, the economy is still developing and the country is still considered a third world country. There is no Obama care, Section 8, Social Security, Food Stamps, EBT or other government funded assistance. Additionally, the job market is quite slow and hard especially with the exchange rate. The pay cut compared to the US is serious. And ultimately has impacted her family greatly. She is far too humble and private to admit it!
Within the first few months of her being down there, her family was victimized and robbed of their personal possessions. The loss of the materials things isn't the issue. The fact that security on the property is comprised and needs to be updated to ensure the family’s safety is crucial. Along with some of the personal possessions, their peace of mind was taken. Possessions can always be bought again, but the safety of Kendra and her family cannot. Who knows how much time we have until another attack occurs.
That is why this GoFundMe campaign was created. To restore that peace of mind for Kendra and her family. She is not asking for help, we are asking for help on her behalf.
What a better way to show her the same love she has shown us over all of these years, then by granting her the only thing that matters the most: the safety of the two little children, husband, and herself.
The money is going to be used to install 4 metal security doors with deadbolts and secure chain link fencing around her property. A project like this is pricey in Central America so this is why she needs our help!
She has always helped so many people in the past and it’s our turn for us to help her. Let’s show Kendra how appreciated she is and how much her network still cares. She has made a difference in our lives and she continues to do so.
Each of the 3 of us boys (her sons) are going to donate $100US each as the opening donations. If anyone else can match or fund a portion of that, it would go a long way to making the family more secure.
Sincerely and with deep gratitude,
"The Boys" Chris, Hung and Mitchell!
