In September 2025, my best friend Kem was diagnosed with breast cancer at 22 after finding a lump in May 2025. Kem has a daughter who is 2 and she is the sole reason Kem is still fighting and can get through the hard days. In January 2025; Kem, her partner and her little girl moved to a new area away from family and all that they knew to have a fresh start. Unfortunately, that same week her car broke down. Due to financial reasons, Kem was not able to fix the car in which at the time she was quoted at least £1300 however this has since increased due to the MOT being due and having 2 flat tyres. She has continued to pay £200 a month since for the cars finance despite the car being broken. The area that Kem lives in only has 1 bus route that allows the buggy and it only goes into the city centre meaning that to get anywhere including crucial doctors appointments/treatments and most importantly the hospital, Kem has got to get 2 busses there and 2 busses back. Kem is currently going through chemotherapy and not only isn’t well enough to get on 4 busses but is also more vulnerable to the common cold or any other common illnesses which obviously busses are full of. There are no local shops within walking distance so even getting a pint of milk proves to be difficult. Unfortunately, there is nothing the finance company can do to help even though she has paid over half of the total balance. The only options are to pay for the car to be fixed then hand it back or send the car to auction which has numerous fees adding up to a minimum of £1000. Not only are there auction fees but also if the car sells for less than the remaining balance she has to pay the difference, the only options are to pay in full or pay it over 6 months which wouldn’t improve her situation in the slightest. Kem is really struggling now without having the car, mainly for hospital appointments etc but also because she feels extremely isolated with no one around her and this is really affecting her mental health. Kem has always been such an independent person and is always the first to help anyone in need and she feels like all of her freedom has been stripped away from her and she feels so isolated especially at a time where being social is so important to keep up positivity. Unfortunately, Kem hasn’t been able to work since her diagnosis and is still waiting to hear back from the likes of ADP (Adult Disability Payment) so money is very tight. Not only would a car benefit Kem with hospital trips, her mental health and basic needs but it would allow her to go out with her little girl and make memories after such a tough year and would also help her daughter’s social skills so much. Kem’s plan is to pay off the remaining finance which is £2600, sell the car for scrap and then use that money as a deposit to start a new finance on a car. Kem shares her journey on TikTok as you may know and recently shared how much she is struggling without the car and suggesting ways people can help ie following to get to 10k so she can get on the creator fund. However, the comments were full of people asking her to start a gofundme so they can help. Kem, being the humble person she is, didn’t want to make one herself as she feels awful for taking money from people for something such as a car. But for her, it’s not just a car, it’s her way to get to and from the hospital for vital treatment, to get food shopping, improve her mental health and most importantly make memories with her little girl after overcoming and fighting Cancer. If you are a parent and drive, you will understand how difficult it would be to not have a car with a toddler especially with nothing around you and cancer on top.
