Kelty Can Run

Kelty is 11; she lives with spastic, quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy due to a brain injury at birth.  She can't walk without support and she certainly can't run ... yet.

I run a lot, my partner runs, my other two kids can run - so why not Kelty? Well, I hadn't really thought it was a possibility until a colleague of mine sent me an article he thought I might connect with about the iconic Boston Marathon runner, Dick Hoyt, who was renowned for pushing his disabled son, Rick, for thousands of miles over hundreds of endurance events. I read the article and then read it again. And not surprisingly, their story did for me what it has likely done for many others: it inspired me.

Several inquiries, conversations, and emails later I was sent a link to the Kartus - a unique, specialized, Canadian-made running wheelchair designed to give people with disabilities the ability to enjoy meaningful outdoor activity. I showed my family and right away we thought: "Yep, we need a Kartus in our lives. How can we make this happen?"

So here I am, creating a Go Fund Me page to ask for help in making sure that when my partner and I run the 2021 Edmonton Half Marathon this August, Kelty Can Run too.

Initial funds raised will go towards the purchase and shipping of a Kartus chair and racing fees for Kelty. Any funds raised over and above the $5000 will be saved for Kelty and put towards future race fees, running gear, and chair maintenance. Thank you all so much.
