Hi my name is Kelly and I am a 28 year old with inoperable brain cancer. I was an avid cross country and track runner with an upcoming college scholarship right before I found out I had a pilocytic astrocytoma in my ventricular system. I underwent brain surgery in 2010 for hydrocephalus, a build up of spinal fluid in my brain, due to the location of the tumor. Since it is in the middle of my brain, doctors decided to just watch the tumor closely instead of removing due to cutting through vital brain tissue. Over the course of 2 years it grew slowly, but all the while causing severe migraines and pains throughout my entire body. I then recieved Gamma Knife radiation in 2012. This, for the next 2 years created swelling of the surrounding tissues in my brain. In May 2014, I started on an IV treatment called Avastin to hopefully contol the swelling. This however, did not help much. My neuro oncologist decided to do a PET scan to see what the tumor was doing on a physiological aspect. The PET scan came back with "hot spots" meaning high grade sections. I was then put on Temozolomide oral chemotherapy for 6 months to a year.
