Writing these words about Kelly is something I never thought would happen.
2020 has once again proved to be a year filled with moments that nightmares are made of with another painful blow to our world.
On Tuesday, November 4th, Kelly Standifird passed away in the late afternoon. I keep reading those words typed out.
I delete them. I try another way to write it. Is there a better way putting that finite moment into words? Did that really happen? Is Kelly really gone? Is it real that we won't be able to have another hug from her? Is it true that we won't listen to her laugh again or see her walking in the door? Will there really never be another day we won't sit down to visit with her? How is it possible that the days following won't have moments of her going out of her way to ask how our family or kids are doing?
I wonder if there is a better or more delicate way to write that devastating news. While the words written are direct, the few simple words aren't a worthy description for the gaping hole left in this world with her gone.
Kelly was every bit of direct yet everything completely opposite of simple. First and foremost, Kelly was a mother to the most valued treasures in her life...her sons. Her love for Zach and Grayson wasn't simple. Her love for them was limitless, unconditional, boundless and fierce.
She was far from simple in who she was as a mother, sister, daughter, aunt, friend, boss, co-worker. Kelly was loving, kind, funny, snarky, spirited, ornery, stubborn, generous (often to a fault), selfless, determined, loyal and unconditional in her love for her family and friends. She had the biggest heart and once she loved you, you felt it! Kelly was a softy and under her ornery demeanor she was a giant teddy bear.
The day prior, Kelly had taken her dogs on a walk. A short time later, Grayson found her unconscious. It was assumed she had a head injury from the fall. Grayson and Zach later learned that their mother had a large aneurysm that had ruptured causing her fall. The only blessing with that devastating news is knowing that Kelly did not suffer any pain. With a great deal of support from those closest to Kelly, Zach followed in his selfless mother's footsteps by making the decision to let her go. Although there won't be another moment added to the long list of memories filled with her kindness, Kelly had arrangements in place to make her last mark in this world by being an organ donor. In knowing Kelly, she is smiling in knowing there are good days ahead of those she's helped and their families.
The coming months are going to be rough for Zach and Grayson to navigate through in taking the steps needed to make their mother proud. Kelly's goal in life was for her boys to feel security, love and support. There are several tedious tasks that need their attention to help them live without their mother a tad easier. The coming days they will struggle in putting their broken hearts back together and work on the steps needed to continue what she wanted for them.
For Kelly, her life revolved around Zach and Grayson's well-being.
