Please help us reunite my 3 year-old granddaughter Anya with her mommy. Anya's mommy, Kelly, has been afflicted with Guillain Barre Syndrome. A fast moving condition that causes the immune system to attack the peripheral nervous system. (Picture an electric cord with its protective coating damaged - exposing the bare wires to short out.) This causes weakening of the muscles and loss of all motor skills in the 4 limbs. It also interferes with a person's breathing, blood pressure and heart rate. Despite 4 visits to her doctor and the ER for help following falls and dropping items, Kelly went undiagnosed for over a month. She was even told her "problem" was psychosomatic! Her condition became so advanced that she could not get up and stand unassisted, or close her hands to grasp things or pick up Anya. Thankfully Kelly found help from a neurosurgeon who instantly knew what her symptoms meant and immediately admitted her to the hospital to begin treatment to stop the progression of GBS. Following 17 days in the hospital, with 4 in the ICU due to the inability to breathe correctly on her own, Kelly will be an inpatient at a fast paced rehab facility for 2 weeks, then she must move again to a nursing home to continue her various therapies, til she is well enough to become an outpatient for the remainder of her treatment. Kelly's recovery back to normalacy will take up to a year or more. She will need specialized care, and a large portion of the healthcare cost will not be covered by their insurance. Family is taking turns caring for Anya, and seeing that she spends time with her mommy. But a hospital room is not an ideal place, and Anya doesn't understand why Kelly can't pick her up, play with her, or better yet - come home. My son Anthony is doing his best, splitting time between work, home with Anya, and being with and encouraging Kelly through her therapy sessions. We don't want Kelly's morale brought down by the thought of her medical expenses. Please consider donating to help pay for Kelly's medical needs. We will be eternally grateful for any help that can come their way. Thank you for taking the time to read our story.
