Keli's Journey Continues...

Many of you may have seen Keli’s facebook post on Tuesday at the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale. Her trip was a preliminary visit to plan for her upcoming surgery in September. She met with her surgical team, endocrinologist, and gastroenterologist. If you recall from her treatment a year ago, she had surgery to remove pelvic adhesions caused by a rare genetic disease called Ovarian Remnant Syndrome. The adhesions have since grown back, and are now attached to her stomach, small intestine, and esophagus. These adhesions are like webs that have grown around these organs, pulling and constricting them in such a way that Keli is in a significant amount of pain. Her pain is also multiplied by the fact that the acid in her stomach is traveling up into her esophagus and has eroded part of her esophagus. The only treatment is to surgically remove the adhesions. This will also involve removing parts of her stomach, small intestine, and esophagus, and reattaching these organs. She will also have a valve placed in her stomach to assist with the acid reflux. Her doctors hope to perform this surgery with laparoscopic incisions, but it’s possible they may have to create a surgical incision from her sternum to her belly button to address all the issues. This is an extremely complicated surgery, but Keli is confident in her team, and loves them all!

Her stay will involve a minimum of 2-3 days in the hospital. If they have to cut her open, her hospital stay becomes 5 days. Once she is released, she must stay in close proximity to the hospital for at least 10 days. Because of her drain tubes, they must monitor her for infection. She will also be restricted to a liquid diet.

I am setting up this new campaign to help with the costly expenses associated with this trip. Keli and her mom, Bonnie, will leave for Mayo September 16th. Keli has appointments all day on the 18th, and surgery is scheduled for the 19th. They will incur fuel, hotel, and meal costs for 2-3 weeks. Then the travel costs on the return trip. This doesn’t even include her insurance copayments! If you are able, please consider donating to this campaign. No amount is too small, and you have the option to remain anonymous.

Keli has been such a strong person throughout all her health issues. She never questions why she has been dealt the cards she has, but instead looks to God for healing and strength. Keli has a fantastic support system of family and friends, and I know we can rally behind Keli as she continues this journey. Please keep Keli and her family in your prayers during the coming weeks as she prepares for this surgery. We love you Keli, and we are here for you!
