On Thursday, August 2, 2018, Kekiaʻi was taken by ambulance to the hospital with chest pain and difficulty breathing where he was admitted and stayed overnight with his mother. His father and aunt also came to be by his side. On Friday, August 3, 2018, around 12:30 p.m. he went into cardiac arrest and was unable to be resuscitated. The sudden and unexpected death of this 14-year old child was a tragic blow to his entire family especially his parents, step-parents, and eight siblings. Kekiaʻi was loved by many. He was looking forward to starting his freshman year at Mililani High School where he was excited to be a part of the junior varsity football team. He loved playing football and would practice days on end, with his team and even alone at home. Kekiaʻi would write down plays in his play book, then go in the yard and practice, he practiced so much that his cleats would make holes all throughout his front yard (which are still present). Not only was he a dedicated athlete, he was a charismatic, funny, kind, loving, caring, responsible and an overall “really good kid.” The loss of this beautiful soul will forever impact his family, friends, acquaintances and anyone lucky enough to have met Kekiaʻi.
This GoFundme has been set up to help his immediate family with two very costly Celebration of Life services for Kekiaʻi, incuding airfare and lodging expenses (for his immediate family). Kekiaʻi spent half of his life on the island of Maui and the other half on Oahu, he has extensive family (both maternal and paternal) on Maui and Oahu. Naturally, his parents and eight siblings will need to travel between both islands.
