Keith Love Makerspace

The vision of  TechBoston Common began 3 years ago as a paint project.  Keith Love, along with a team of staff members, decided that the empty library space could use a facelift.  It had not been used for several years, had old broken furniture and even older books and shelving.  TechBoston Academy is an inner-city public school in Boston, and Keith Love was one of the co-headmasters, along with Nora Vernazza.   As we planned out the design of the small facelift project, Keith kept adding in more and more ideas for an all-inclusive, innovative, learner-centered environment.  This was the birth of TechBoston Common.
Three years later, the space now houses a large main library space, a college and career center, and digital learning space for credit recovery.  The final room was reserved for Keith's final "phase" of the plan.  He wanted a maker space that would be used by all students for exploration, design, creation, and project-based learning.
Unfortunately, Keith's vision never materialized due to many factors, including COVID 19 and his illness.  In a phone call just weeks before his passing, he said to me, "Make sure this happens, no matter what".  This statement embodies what Keith Love was all about.  Keep pushing, keep going, do it for the students.
So here we are, in 2020, in the final phase of TechBoston Common, which Keith coined the name for.   We are building that maker space, and want it to be named after Keith upon completion.
The space will require not only mobile furniture, but also a plethora of supplies and materials.  Art supplies, legos, wire, etc for hands-on design.   It will need technology, such as cameras, sound and editing equipment, along with a state of the art virtual reality cart for "in person" exploration for students.   Below is the approximate breakdown of costs:
Furniture and storage-  20,000
Technology-  15,000
Supplies-  10,000
VR Cart-  8,000
Room Prep- 2,000

Please consider donating to the TechBoston Common maker space.  Our students deserve the kind of hands-on, project-based learning that drives them to success.
Thank you!
