Keita Ellis's Recovery Journey

For a person who loves health and wellness, finding out that you have a severe knee injury that will never heal without surgery is devastating. Within two days of suffering a patellar tendon tear my friend Keita was presented with a shocking diagnosis and a course of treatment that would end up costing her more than she would earn this year -- starting with a $9000 down payment which needed to be paid in 1 week. Her surgery is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2020. With this fundraiser I am hoping to help her raise enough money for this and most of the cost of the surgery.
Keita needs at least $9000 by Monday, Oct. 5, 2020 in order to keep this scheduled surgery. If she does not pay the initial amount my Monday her surgery will be cancelled and she does not know when the surgeon will be able to see her again. Putting off the surgery would only worsen her condition.
Keita loves to workout but is the first to tell me that her injury did not happen during her workout. On Saturday, Sept. 26, 2020, just like any other Saturday, Keita had just completed a workout and was celebrating with her workout team when a jump that she had done many times before ended in tremendous pain. She fell to the ground and EMTs were called. They looked her over and decided that she needed to be rushed to the hospital. After multiple x-rays, sonograms and an MRI she was released 9-1/2 hours later with instructions to see a specialist first thing Monday morning. The orthopedic surgeon who saw her told her plainly: without surgery she will never be able to stand, climb stairs or put any weight on her knee again. Eventually her muscles will deteriorate. The recommended treatment is immediate surgery and months of PT.
Keita has told me, "This was a total freak accident. It's crazy but I am encouraged. I know I will get back to myself."

The surgery costs $50,000. The 6-12 months of intensive physical therapy an additional cost. Keita's friends and family have come together to do what we can and we are working to raise the money that she needs. My hope is that this fundraiser will fill the gap.
