Keidin's Diabetic Alert dog
Donation protected
Hello,
My Name is Kyle Pratt. I have 2 sons. Zane who is 11 and Keidin who is 8.
When Keidin was 6 he got sick. We figured it was just the flu but it hung on for about a month. Once he started feeling better he started wetting the bed a lot and he always had a tummy ache. We thought that maybe he a urinary tract infection. We figured we better take him to the Doctor. They tested his blood sugar and sent us to the childrens hospital on the spot. His blood sugar was over 500.
He was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes and put on insulin that day. When his blood sugars were back to normal they gave him all the pizza he could eat. They trained my wife and I on how to take care of him. Once we got home it was like bringing home a newborn. We had to learn how to keep him alive and that really started to sink in,
After a week or so we realized that the worst part was going to be during the night. We have to check him every 2 hours . He was going very low at night and it is very hard to wak a little boy up from a low and make him eat. We were rubbing the fast acting glucose on his gums. It was stressful.
We do have the Dexcom now and it has an alarm so we don't have as many lows in the middle of the night. But the Dex is a machine and they can fail. Dexcom just sent us a warning in the mail that our models audio can alert sometimes with no audio. So we just can't depend on it %100.
This is why we would like to get Keidin a dog. Plus he loves animals. His favorite show is Wild Kratts. This money would be going to help us get him a diabetic alert dog. We would like to be able to have the dog ordered by the end of 4/2016 so we can tell him on his birthday that he will be able to have a dog. They take over a year to get after ordered because they raise them from puppies and train them.
We would be so grateful to anyone that wanted to help Keidin have and alert dog. These dogs save lives and I know dogs are more dependable than any monitor he can wear. Thank you so much for your time.
