Keewaydin Food Boat HELP BRAD FIGHT FOR HIS LIFE!

Keewaydin Island in Naples Florida (at the southern end), is a treasure to many locals, seasonal residents, & travelers from around the world. If you know our cherished island, then you know our local Food Boat “Just Beachy Burgers & More”,

owned by husband & wife, Brad Homuth & Lori Dean.

Not only does this dynamic couple own & operate our cherished food boat, they also own “Keewaydin Island Local Beachwear” boat & “Keewaydin Island Local Water Shuttle” boat.

Speaking for everyone who holds Keewaydin Island close to their heart- without these boats & 2 people, it just wouldn’t be the same.

I hopefully have your attention...

Alright...with that being said....here it goes...

On Saturday, March 18th, 2023- after weeks of just not feeling himself, Brad was suddenly rushed to the hospital & was immediately admitted. Since then, his health has quickly deteriorated. As of today, we don’t have many answers. We do know that something is attacking his spinal cord, therefore has affected his ability to walk & stand, memory loss, among many other things. He is in extreme pain, even on high dosages of pain medication. It is now confirmed there is a tumor-like mass at the base of his brain. Due to this, he is in the Neurology ICU. They are still waiting on tests to identify the cause of this mass & what exactly it is. He will be receiving his 2nd spinal tap for more testing at some point today. Lori & family have also been waiting for cancer cell tests to come back, so that can be ruled out. Needless to say, this is a horrifying situation. Alongside Brad, Lori is, of course, standing strong (as she always does), all while trying to run 3 businesses. In Brad & Lori’s case, I’m sure everyone can imagine the weight on Lori’s shoulders. Especially considering Brad is the Captain of the Food Boat & Lori the Captain of the T-Shirt Boat.

Lori & Brad not only have the expenses of operating 3 boats on the water, they also have personal bills on top of that. Lori needs to focus on Brad & taking care of herself right now. Many conversations have taken place in the last few days among us locals on & off the water- trying to figure out how & what we can do to help them.

Raising money to ease the financial strain & stress right now seems to make the most sense. If you don't know, operating a business on the water is not cheap & is not for the weak. It requires CONSTANT hard work, repairs, storage, fuel, insurance…

the list goes on.

Thankfully, “Just Beachy Burgers & More” has a strong team behind them.

Captain Clay, Sherri & Chris have been working diligently to keep income flowing to the Food Boat from Wednesday to Sunday. Unfortunately, as of right now, this is the only business they can operate with Brad & Lori being in such an unfortunate position.

Having the pleasure of getting to know Lori & Brad for almost a decade now- as a local & now an independent charter captain- at least half of my days in a year is spent on Keewaydin Island. You have friends, family and then friends who become your family.

We have become a FAMILY out there-an ISLAND FAMILY. When things like this happen in life, family is there. I’m sure many of us can relate to what it takes to take care of a loved one who has suddenly become sick.

We as a family... have decided we absolutely CAN NOT sit back & not help...

Speaking from experience, it is hard to ask for help sometimes- especially for people like Brad & Lori. They operate like many of us do & don't want any handouts.

I know WITHOUT a doubt if this was happening to myself or any of us, they would do the EXACT SAME THING WE ARE, without hesitation.

WITH THAT BEING SAID...

local beloved couple as they wait for answers & Brad gets on the road to recovery.
