Ten kilometers outside of Egypt's most isolated oasis, Siwa, into the desert mountains rich with fossils of an oceanic sea floor past, a majestic space and air can be found where we have started to create our dream ecological farm. In nature's pure beauty, her abundance offers powerful healing as the desert's wisdom always provides awakening insight. We have endless dreams on what we wish to share and create with you on this land, and we're excited to be able to open up this opportunity for all of us. Crucially, our mission now is to keep our plants alive.
On our generous spread of 200 fedan (over 200 acres), we have so far nourished 50 fedan with all organic plant life. We have about 5,000 date palm, olive, and lemon trees that are Siwa's essential crops thriving in this environment already planted. To keep them company and for more variety on our plates, we also have rows and rows of delicious vegetables, fruits, and herbs such as onion, tomato, potato, beet, zucchini, mint, lemongrass, sunflower, pomegranate, fig, and jujube to name a few.
As an ecofarm, all of our farming practices sustainable development: not being harmful to the environment or depleting its natural resources, meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. We use what we have, applying compost (plant waste), manure (animal waste), and effective microorganisms (EM: naturally-occurring soil regenerative organisms) to feed our crops. Everything is organically recycled, supporting long-term ecological balance: food from nature going back to nature. No chemicals or pesticides or any inorganic matters are used. We farm consciously, not only for the conservation of our environment, but also for the health of our own bodies or the animals, whoever eats our plants.
We need to be keeping all of our plants happy and hydrated and we must do so respecting Mother Nature, keeping her healthy as well.
To pump water, we now have a 32 kilowatt generator costing too much diesel and oil, burning up fossil fuels, and exhausting pollution that all is unnecessarily damaging our environment. We are finding difficulty with our current system as our resources are limited in the amount of care we can give our plants. It costs 100 Egyptian pounds ($5.60) for 1 hour of watering and we need 6-8 hours per day to feed all the crops, which is not working out at all with our financial capacity nor our perspective to extend our production. Allowing our generator eat up fossil fuels is our temporary means and it's reaching its end.
Trees are dying while we can open up to utilizing the abundance of resources we are blessed with under Egypt's Saharan Desert sun. We have all the natural energy we could ever need in our permanent, sustainable solution to power our ecofarm with solar panels.
For our irrigation tank, nature has built half of the water reservoir using mountains as walls 30 meters high from the ground. We will finish building the pool using stones as walls dividing into a reservoir for irrigation, a fish farm, and a swimming pool. All labor costs will be taken care of by me, however I will need some help for the supplies.

As I, Sayed Abu Seif, have been working with Egypt's Western Desert safaris for over 20 years, I'm happy to have found my passion in tourism being able to share the beauty of our oasis. I have so much love and I want to pass it to the people, giving to you what my family land is giving to me. With our ecofarm, we aspire to preserve the traditional agricultural practices I have inherited from my grandfather. Farming traditionally in the most sustainably conscious ways keeps our connection with the land that many modern farming adaptations being practiced locally are losing in the misconception that embracing anything new even if not ecofriendly, or choosing the easy way following big companies' use of chemicals, is better. Not only do we want to influence our local community, but also open up the opportunity to exchange knowledge and experiences in agriculture with tourists and volunteers from all over the world, offering a revitalizing, deeper insight of Siwa. We are sharing our manifestation of all natural, organic, permaculture in Berber style with global influences.
We have established a beautiful foundation so far in our ecofarm, but the reality is it can't keep up as trees are dying going without care in the amounts of water they need, being limited in our current resources. We can only sustain the plant life on our desert ecofarm with your help in our solar panel solution.
With the foundation of a solar powered ecofarm, we can progress in what we're ultimately striving to create - a health center for yoga and meditation, as we are in the perfect environment for healing and reconnection. Our health center will be a completely self-sustaining community, living naturally and consciously among the land where we are as we are, providing for our needs and reciprocating the love back to our environment. In everything we do with this land, we only want to compliment the good energy and love it endlessly gives to the people.
