Dear Friends and Family,
I originally created this gofundme campaign over a month ago when my Momma had a fall. But now it has taken on a very different meaning.
I've always known that falls in the elderly are a big deal. And in the past few months, I have seen firsthand how devastating they can be. A fall that may result in some bruises and soreness in a younger, healthier peson can be life-threatening in an older person - whose body struggles to heal and recover, and sometimes gives in.
My mother has had a number of falls in the last couple years and they have become more frequent in the last. Some were pretty nasty. And the worst so far was 2 weeks ago. She fell and hit her head, which resulted in some intracranial bleeding. Fortunately, it did not require any surgery BUT...it had a significant effect on her functioning and we have months of rehab ahead of us.
You all know her. You all love her. She's feisty. And she's proud. We all want to keep her safe for as long as possible. Our family would like to make our house accessible to our matriarch - including remodeling our bathroom - to provide her with the independence she deserves. It's been on our 'wish list' for quite a while but old houses are always surprising you with unexpected issues and expenses.
I took it upon myself to reach out to all of you for help. We were given a very general estimate. We are hoping to get more details about materials and expenses within the next couple weeks and I will update accordingly - just in case someone would like to donate materials or store credit instead. No gift is too small.
Given her frailty, keeping my momma safe as long as possible is a priority in our home. Being able to provide her with a home where she can be both safe and independent would be the best gift we can give her.
always,
lourdes
