I’m raising funds for myself so I can continue doing highway and roadside cleanup across Western Arizona. I’ve already been out doing this work, and I’m asking for support so I can keep at it during the safer cleanup season from October through March, when the weather is more manageable and I can get more done.
This is work I have done before, including cleaning the northbound I-17 when I lived in Phoenix. More recently, I spent time along US 60 from its off ramp to around the corner of its bridge, where I removed a lot of road debris that could threaten drivers’ tires. Too often, trash and other debris end up along the highway. Sometimes people leave it behind, and sometimes it blows out of a car or truck without the driver even knowing. Either way, it creates a mess and can become a hazard for travelers.
Another important part of this work is removing environmental hazards left behind on the roadside, including abandoned tires and used oil bottles. Used oil bottles can become brittle under the sun, so it is important that they be removed quickly and transported to a recycling location. Today I recovered two full oil bottles and many more that were empty, and I know that still was not 100% of what was out there.
This work benefits others, but it helps me too. Being out there cleaning up the roadside helps me process my thoughts, and when I finish, I feel better knowing the area looks the way it should for the people passing through.
Donations will help cover my wages for the day at about $25 an hour, along with gas, bags, supplies, other equipment needs, and trash disposal at my local landfill transfer station, which can cost up to $25. Support would also help me add traffic cones and battery-operated flashing lights so I can better alert oncoming traffic that a worker and vehicle are ahead.
My goal is to cover a wide stretch of Western Arizona, including the California line to Vicksburg Road, AZ 95, US 60, Bouse Highway, and smaller satellite roads as well. Because this cleanup work is ongoing through the cooler months, recurring donations would be especially helpful for keeping up with wages, fuel, supplies, safety equipment, and disposal costs over time. One-time donations are also truly appreciated and will still make a real difference.
If you believe in cleaner, safer roads, please consider donating or sharing my fundraiser. Your support will help me keep removing trash and road debris from the places so many people travel every day.
