With my current health condition deteriorating my arm muscles at a rapid pace, I am struggling to cope moving and positioning, in a normal bed. My wife who is my full-time carer and who also suffers from her own health conditions (fibromyalgia). Struggles with my basic care as she's having to lift and bend over me to help with dressing and positioning, in and out of bed.
I'm not sleeping well, due to the discomfort of trying to move into a suitable position in my current bed.
My local authority can only supply me with a single medical bed and mattress. Forcing me to sleep separate to my wife.
I'm happily married and refuse to let go of my basic rights to a relationship, by sleeping in a separate bed to my partner. When I share a bed with my wife, it's the difference between my carer and my partner. I can actually hug my wife at night and feel like I have a normal loving relationship, without all the care needs that takes over my daily living.
The mattress these medical beds come with, result in me having pressure sores. As I was previously in one, when I had an accident in 2019 and broke my hip. Therefore, I know first-hand how uncomfortable they can be.
We investigated this option, as we had no other choice. Unfortunately, the medical bed they would provide, wouldn't leave me enough room to access my wet room or access around my bedroom.
We are a low-income family on benefits. I have recently been forced out of work, due to my deteriorating condition, as I couldn't manage 16 hrs a week anymore. We claim, PIP, ESA and Universal credit. My wife is unable to work, due to being my fulltime carer and parental responsibility for our 3 children. Whom are 7, 13 and 15. Therefore, her only income is carers allowance.
We have no outstanding debts and have no savings at all.
We recently had a look at a double bed we went to see that covered everything we need for support. It includes bedrails, a gel lined mattress to prevent bed sores and has all the mechanical features to help me with my care needs. Plus, it's a double, therefore I can remain sleeping next to my wife, without being forced to sleep apart.
I would really appreciate any help anyone can offer to us and would be forever grateful for your support in this situation to holding onto this one basic human right of maintaining a loving relationship with my wife.
