Keeping the Eastside Vibrant & Loved

The devastating tornado that struck multiple locations in Tennessee on March 3, 2020 has left a path far wider than the initial touchdowns. Power outages, lack of access, and necessary repairs have it impossible for the local businesses who remained standing to continue daily operations.

Now, nine days later, the additional spectre of the Coronavirus and our state’s emergency status make opening or successfully operating these small businesses in the near future impossible.

We are we are working to support those small businesses with a significant survival rate, specifically those in the Idea Hatchery – Alegria, Goodbuy Girls, Black Dog Beads, Riveter, Tertiary Sight, the Kind Poppy, Raven and Whale, and Defunct Books – as well as Fairy Tales Bookstore and FLWR on 11th Street, The Hip Zipper on Forrest Avenue, Fanny’s House of Music and our foodie friends at Pied Piper Creamery and I Dream of Weenie. These businesses sustained damage but were open this past weekend to make sure their neighbors knew that, as always, they are there for them. Now it’s time to be there for these folks who have been and will continue to be VITAL parts of our beloved East Nashville landscape.

The above listed businesses illustrate what makes the neighborhood so unique – small businesses, no franchises, no chains. This also can mean, in the case of natural disasters, no corporate funds to keep a business afloat during closure. The small shops supported by this campaign are in a position to keep the foot traffic and tourism alive in East Nashville as it heals and recovers from loss; they need this support to remain open while their sister businesses, who suffered deeper damage, rebuild.

It took some fussing to get some of the above owners to agree because they are all housed in structures still standing while they have contemporaries who have lost their buildings, but we made them understand that we NEED THEM here more than ever; this is what we can do to make sure that happens.
