Keeping Tarka Afloat
Donation protected
Having sprung a major leak last year, Tarka is having extensive work done to her hull. Several planks are being replaced by Patrick Richardson at his boatyard at Potter Heigham. This requires specific skills in traditional boatbuilding, fastening mahogany planks to a new set of oak timbers using copper nails ......it is therefore rather expensive (estimated cost £5,000-7,500)!
WE WOULD BE VERY GRATEFUL IF YOU WOULD CONSIDER MAKING A SMALL CONTRIBUTION IF YOU ARE ABLE.
Tarka is probably unique. A clinker-built dinghy by Lyttle's of Brundall dating from the 1890s, she is quite likely one of the oldest boats on the Norfolk Broads. Tarka first came into the Kinder family in 1938, when she was bought at auction for 15 guineas by Geoffrey Kinder ("Bumpa"). Over the years she has given pleasure to many, and successive generations have learnt how to sail in her.
Inevitably age takes its toll. We hope that these repairs will keep Tarka afloat for many years to come, carrying future generations across Heigham Sound, Hickling, and Horsey in her usual stately fashion.
