Our son has severe autism and medication-resistant epilepsy. He has had one surgery that didn’t help, and doctors are soon planning another. He is prone to elopement, refuses to sleep in his own bed at 15 years old, and the chaos in his brain makes him self-injure all the time. His doctors recommended a safety bed. His last time in the hospital, they had to use one for him, but insurance refuses to cover one, full stop. Out-of-pocket cost for this bed is $15,096.64. It’s insane; who has that kind of money? We just need to be able to keep him safe, and we were offered only one insurance plan by our employer, and they cover diddly squat regardless of medical needs.
If I had a wood shop and an industrial sewing machine, I would make it myself…but I don’t, and we have tried all commercial alternatives, and they can’t hold up to his strength. I’ve never done this, never thought I’d be this desperate, but here I am, just trying to protect my son from endangering and hurting himself while we hope and pray someone figures out how to help him.
Funds are solely to go towards a safety bed.
