Since the 1980s, the volunteers of Llangollen Railcars have been working hard to restore and operate unusual or unique 1950s former British Railways railcars for future generations to enjoy.
In some cases, this has involved costly ground-up restorations with individual vehicles having to be stripped back to basic component level. Interiors, engines and bodywork have had to be rebuilt, and much of this work has been groundbreaking for DMU preservation.
Llangollen Railcars are a voluntary organisation and membership is open to everyone irrespective of background or ability, and we appreciate that whilst many are very supportive of our work, they are not always able to give their time.
This GoFundMe page has been set up to allow those who wish to, contribute towards the continued restoration and preservation of the Llangollen Railcar fleet via a donation.
Donations of any size will be grately appreciated and invaluably assist the group's volunteers with covering the substantial costs of consumables, new materials, component refurbishment and occasional contract work needed to keep the fleet in traffic, and available for the public to experience.
Here are some recent examples of expenditure by the group for routine maintenance and on-going restoration projects:
Brake Block - £55 (16 per vehicle)
Floor Lino - £25 per square meter
Re-Chroming of exterior door grab handle - £80 per handle
Drum of Oil - £119
Tin of Paint - £100
Seat Reupholstery - £200 per seat
Batteries - £250 (2 sets per vehicle)
Wheel Tyre Turning on a lathe - £400 per axle (4 per vehicle)
