Kelly has complex hereditary spastic paraplegia, which is a neurological degenerative disease effectively an upper motor neuron disease. Kelly has been an active member of the local community, working, volunteering and raising her three sons. She has worked in a variety of roles including homeless and domestic violence support, teaching at university and project management. Kelly was a talented artist who has represented Australia at an international level and found a lot of joy in all aspects of art. She has volunteered to share her art skills with workshops in various local schools and community organisations. Kelly has also been involved with Kids caring for country cultural group since it began, with her boys growing up with the support of the ‘family’ they found in the group. More recently Kelly has been taking her granddaughter to Guyahyn to continue that connection with the next generation. Over the past three years her mobility has declined and with that her ability to participate in the community she loves. Even though it has become increasingly difficult she has persisted and until recently has been participating in cultural playgroup with her granddaughter. Kelly requires use of a wheelchair to get around. She has a solid support system of family and independent support workers however as her mobility is decreasing, the need to transport Kelly in her wheelchair is approaching. With this the community Kelly relies on for support and wellbeing are banding together to help raise funds to purchase a wheelchair accessible vehicle which will will be driven by her family members and support workers to transport her out into the community. Access to the community is vital to her wellbeing.
