We need you!

There is power in words, and words written or spoken help bring justice and advocacy to the forefront.

"Keeper of the Fire”  is an important film that looks at the role poets and writers play in activism through the life and work of Mission poet Alejandro Murguia.

Alejandro’s work and words from Mexico to Nicaragua to the San Francisco Mission District has inspired and lifted our community. Leaders come in many forms and his words call for action and activism.  His work touches on the struggles of the Mission District and beyond that resonate familiarity and brotherhood. As Founder of Calle 24 Latino Cultural District, we know firsthand how the arts and activism are an integral part of social movements.  We ask you to donate to help keep the fire alive.  This film will preserve our stories, raise awareness and continue the struggle for a just and equitable world.

Through the life and work of Mission poet, author and activist Alejandro Murguia, "Keeper of the Fire," explores the roles activist writers play in the fight for a just and equitable world. This half-hour documentary follows Murguia on lyrical journeys from Nicaragua to Mexico City, and from East Los Angeles to San Francisco’s North Beach, but most of all it is rooted in the Mission District, where Murguia campaigns against rampant gentrification and fights for cultural preservation.

As one of the internationally known “Mission Poets,” along with such writers as Roberto Vargas, Nina Serrano and U.S. Poet Laureate Juan Felipe Herrera, Murguia carries forward the tradition of politically engaged writers including Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Federico Garcia Lorca, Ernest Hemmingway, Pablo Neruda, and Ernesto Cardenal. He has won two American Book Awards and served as the first Latino Poet Laureate of San Francisco. Once completed, “Keeper of the Fire” will be broadcast nationally and be screened in schools and communities.
