Hi I'm Blake Canter,
I'm a young, small-scale, ecological, local farmer, looking to continue to learn and evolve my career in my hometown, Tallahassee, FL.
For those of you that know me, I'm seeking a little help keeping Owen River Farm LLC going -- a buffer until my fall season is going strong. This will allow me to stay focused on practicing and learning farming (both in the field and through books and research) while growing you wonderful produce, without having to split my time working elsewhere.
For those of you who don't know me, here's a little background:
Going into a career of small-scale farming isn't the easiest with the economy today. Especially since I don't come from a farming family owning land -- I grew up in the suburbs.
But it's possible!
In 2011, after completing an AA degree towards engineering, I had a feeling my dream wasn't further down that path so I went on a hunch that I might like farming and traveled to Petaluma California where I attended a wonderful program, Green String Institute, which was the perfect initiation into sustainable farming. I loved it.
However, still unsure whether I should make a career of farming, I attempted college again (for architecture this time, thinking all the math I'd taken would apply but enjoying the art more). Again, I did well in my classes but after a year I gave in to my heart and realized I just wouldn't be happy at any job but farming! So I set out again and got some more experience with a couple farming internships.
In 2014 I started Owen River Farm . It's just a third of an acre on leased property but by the spring of 2015 I was having promising success selling vegetables at local markets. ORF is a stepping stone and practicing grounds towards owning land of my own.
Here's a pic of one of my spring CSA shares (community supported agriculture is a prepaid weekly farm basket subscription):
I'm asking for just a little help to kick-start my fall season so I can continue to practice and research on my own while providing my community with fresh, local produce of excellent quality.
America, the world, needs more small-scale farmers. Here's a chance to help one make it!
