Tom is a hard working Truck Driver, Dad & Grandpa with a Motorcycle Hobby.
____________
Thomas “Tom” Masberg & Amy Olson, planned a motorcycle ride on Sunday September 5th, 2021 down to Alma, WI from New Prague, MN. It was a beautiful Labor Day weekend until their ride came to an abrupt halt.
At about 1:00 PM, they collided with a deer along a stretch of Highway 60 in Wabasha County before a sharp curve just north of Spring Creek Motocross Park. Needless to say, they were unable to complete their journey to Alma that day.
They rode along Highway 60, which was perfect for riding as it was windy and scenic.
Before taking a particularly sharp curve, a doe ran out from the tall grass on the left side of the road and appeared suddenly before Tom was able to make a move. They hit the deer dead on, essentially a t-bone hit. The Deer did not survive. The hit threw them both from the bike. Amy landed in the middle of the road while Tom was 60 ft away from her on the shoulder. He looked down at his foot and knew he couldn’t walk, but crawled over to assist her getting out of the road.
Soon a car passed and called for help. A group of motorcyclists also came upon the scene and took everything over. The fellow bikers closed the road down and helped collect what belongings they could recover.
Thanks to those who helped on the scene! Whose names we were able to find: Kevin and Traci Jo Van Wyhe, Rhonda Gearing, and Kolton Heisler.
Tom mentions not being sure exactly how many people were there, “it felt like 30 bikers, but could have been as few as 4 or 5.”
They were transported to St. Mary’s in Rochester by Lake City Ambulance.
Tom is covered in bandages from road rash. The worst being the compound fracture to his left ankle, in which they added a plate & two screws.
Amy suffered; bruising, a hematoma, laceration on her left forearm and the worst of her injuries is a hairline fracture on her pelvis and dislocated right ankle.
They spent 3 days in the hospital and recovery time is estimated at 6 weeks for both of them.
The entire household is laid up. They help each other. Tom works for himself, so he could use some assistance in money to keep him rolling with his expenses.
Since they’ve been home; bandages, crutches, wheelchairs, transfer belts, walkers, meds and NOT WORKING IS DRIVING TOM CRAZY!
In his current state, it’ll take some time to get those wheels turning again. Doctors recommend 6 weeks (so far) before Tom can drive truck again.
Any help to Keep Tom’s wheels turning would be much appreciated!
