The The Story Emporium and Bookshop was created with one simple but powerful vision: to give the people of Hutto a place to gather, connect, and belong.
Founded by Ash O’Rourke, this independent bookstore and creative space has quickly become more than just a shop. It’s a third space — somewhere you can meet a friend for coffee, attend a book club, discover a new author, bring your child for story time, join a game night, or simply sit and breathe among shelves filled with possibility.
But right now, The Story Emporium is facing an unexpected and urgent challenge.
Due to an ongoing dispute with a utility provider, the shop is unjustly out a significant sum of money. While that situation is being worked through, the financial strain — combined with the naturally slower post-holiday retail season — has put the store at real risk of closing its doors.
And the impact of that closure would ripple far beyond one storefront.
The Story Emporium supports numerous local artists and craftsmen who sell their handmade goods and creative work in the shop. It provides a platform for authors, makers, and small business owners to share their talents with the community. It hosts both free and paid events so that cost is never a barrier to connection. Readers — and even those who don’t consider themselves readers — have found friendships, creativity, and community within these walls.
For many, this isn’t just a bookstore. It’s where they found their people.
This season has also been personally challenging for Ash. She is very pregnant and has endured two serious hospitalizations in recent months. During a time when she would normally pour every extra ounce of energy and resources into sustaining the shop through a slow season, her capacity has understandably been limited. Even so, her love for Hutto and her commitment to this space have never wavered.
Ash didn’t build this store just to sell books. She built it to build community.
Now, she needs her community to rally around her.
If you are able, please consider donating to help cover the unexpected financial gap and keep The Story Emporium’s doors open while the utility dispute is resolved. Every contribution, no matter the size, makes a difference.
If donating isn’t possible right now, you can still make a huge impact:
• Visit the shop and pick up your next read.
• Shop for Easter basket gifts from the curated selection of books and local goods.
• Attend one of the paid events on the schedule.
• Share this page with friends and neighbors.
Small businesses are the heart of towns like Hutto. When we show up for them in hard seasons, we protect the spaces that make our community special.
Let’s make sure The Story Emporium and Bookshop continues to be a place where stories — and people — flourish.
Thank you for standing with Ash and for supporting local.
