Hello friends, acquaintances and fellow fresnans, I'm Jo from Shallow End and I manage this space with my partner Nathan DeRaud. This space is our baby that we fixed from the ground up since June of 2022. We gave up our home, our jobs, and free time to pursue a community space that is accessible for all. It hasn't been perfect given the circumstances but we've still been able to provide a space for shows, pop-up events, film viewings, and a work space for artists with help from friends. We still have so much more to offer but we've poured all we have and are struggling to pay our electricity bill, buy equipment for workshops, get an in house PA system (we've been borrowing from friends) and not to mention struggling to find housing in our personal lives.
In the summer we were using an outdated AC model that came with our unit and it ran our bill up insanely high plus we were throwing quite a bit of shows. Luckily we were able to get a brand new ac unit that is more cost-effective in August but on October 31st we received a final notice that our $844 bill must be paid in full or our electricity will be shut off. We already had something like this happen in the beginning of 2023 where our electricity was shut off because of a $1,100 bill under my name (not included in fund) so we had to change it to my partners name and now we are facing the same problem.
This is something we've wanted to deal with and resolve on our own but it has been taking a toll on both of us and we have no more options.. we threw a fundraiser that was supposed to help us raise the money but due to some technical difficulties on our part and the weather we didn't raise much but that money helped us get by halloween weekend and for that we're thankful. Events take a lot of planning, patience, and work and I am grateful to have this opportunity to work on something I 100% believe in.
On top of the bill we've really been trying to start workshops, weekly movie nights, and a youtube intimate concert series which we'd need in house equipment for such as; foldable tables, foldable chairs, speakers, mics, stands for speakers + mics, a mixer that isn't a dinosaur, gives out when it wants to, and isn't a pain in the ass to move around. These things would open up so many doors not just for us but for everyone in the valley, we'd love to do as many free and affordable events as possible. We are blessed that Nathan has a job at guitar center and with that we can get almost all of these things at discounted rates, so with that and your help all of these things are within grasp!! Thank you for being here with us and for simply even reading this far, it means so much to us♥️
