Let's Keep Rosie Rollin'
Hi my name is Rosie Lukenda. I'm a 50's years young brave, passionate and inspired woman. In March 2000 I was diagnosed with Parkinson's. Through 17 years of learning and coping with a life changing disease I have still maintained a fierce, generous, stubborn, talented and strong nature. So strong as to be optimistic, compassionate and a working photographer, despite the things life has thrown at me.
It hasn't been easy! One of the things I have lost is my mobility. I rely on help from both the ministry and my network of my family, my friends, the community and my healthcare team. As time passes I rely more and more on my wheelchairs. These days I spend 80-90% of my day in the chairs.
I have 2 wheelchairs. One is a power chair that I use when the weather permits to go outside and around the neighbourhood. The ministry generously provided this chair. This chair will not fold up and go in a car and in the house I cannot access the washroom with it.
The 2nd chair I have is the one I use the most. It is a standard non- motorized wheelchair. It has now outlived its useful span of service. It was once a light, fixable chair, comfortable to sit in, easy to push, and easy to load in and out of a car. The chair is now falling to pieces and is haywired and duck-taped together. Let's keep Rosie rolling!
At times during the day Parkinson's makes my body get wiggling and moving so much that the chair is being rattled to pieces. I need a customized chair to fit my condition and this comes with a hefty price-tag. I have been refused 3x by the ministry for a replacement chair.
I am am asking for your HELP, please. A good quality chair would be life changing and would last many years.
I need a chair that will provide physical support (as opposed to physical damage). It needs to be easy to use on my own and for others to transport me for social, professional and medical appointments. I don't have a vehicle of my own so I rely on others and their vehicles. A modern, lightweight chair is expensive but would help me beyond my dreams.
The reality is that this is where I do most of my living. Can you help me please, Let's keep Rosie rolling!
I have found an Occupational Therapist in Vernon BC with the skills to customize a wheelchair to fit my needs. All that's left to do is raise the money to pay for the customization and the chair. I will also need funds to travel out of our remote area to customize equipment.
