Keep our 11 month old kitten alive
*** Please read Update #4. We will miss you, Echo. ***
Last August we walked into Cat Therapy Santa Barbara expecting to adopt one kitten. Instead, we found a pair of bonded 7-week-old kittens who had been rescued together. We couldn’t bear to tear them apart. So we adopted them together and named them Echo and Bravo. They have been inseparable since the day we brought them home.
Unfortunately, Tuesday night we rushed Echo to the hospital. She was lethargic and having trouble breathing. The vet told us that her chest was filling with fluid, and promptly drained and tested it. There were several theories, and the vets all told us to prepare for the worst.
Luckily, we discovered Echo’s condition is treatable with surgery. It’s called a Peritoneal Pericardial Diaphragmatic Hernia. In short, the wall between her liver and heart never fully formed. Her liver is pressing against her heart, collapsing one of the chambers in her heart and causing the fluid buildup in her chest cavity. If left untreated, it’s extremely deadly. But, with surgery, she would be able to live a long and happy life.
Unfortunately, we’ve already poured a lot of our emergency funds into the initial vet visits and chest draining. Our quote for the medical costs is up to $6,000, which is a devastating number to two college students working part-time.
We will be trying as hard as we can to raise the funds for Echo to live. She is only 11 months old, and she and her brother have so much life ahead of them. Bravo, a very social kitty, becomes withdrawn and depressed whenever his sister isn’t around. Please consider donating to keep our kitties together.
