Nahuel Recoba is a freshman voice major from DeForest, Wisconsin, who has made a mark in the few short months he has been enrolled at UW-Whitewater.
“Nahuel is an extremely talented tenor who won first place in a statewide vocal competition last November, and he has a lead role in our spring musical, ‘The Addams Family,’” says a UW-Whitewater professor very familiar with Nahuel and his potential.

And in addition to winning awards and garnering lead roles, Nahuel has already received a scholarship: the Music Talent Special Scholarship 2019-2020. And he is a paid section leader at a local church, First English Lutheran.
“My colleagues within UW-Whitewater’s voice area feel that Nahuel is one of the most talented freshman tenors we have ever heard,” said his professor.

The trouble is, Nahuel is a DACA-eligible student. Because of his immigration status, he has to pay the out-of-state tuition rate, which has proved difficult for him and his family. Nahuel has an immediate financial need to keep his college path intact; an outstanding balance due on his fall tuition must be paid off for him to continue and complete his spring semester classes. We are asking for your help to pay this balance, and assure Nahuel’s promising college eduction can continue.
This shortfall did not come as a surprise to Nahuel, and he has been working diligently to try to solve it. In the fall, he tried taking out student loans to solve the problem, but after putting forth five different members of his extended family as cosigners to three different banks, none of the banks would approve a loan.
With his fall tuition and housing not fully paid off, until late January Nahuel was unable to register for spring classes. One of his professors advocated on his behalf, and, with a partial payment from his parents, Financial Services at the university allowed Nahuel to enroll in classes. In addition, they gave us, a group of community members who would like to see him stay in college, another month to set up a Go Fund Me to raise the remaining balance — just under $9,000.
In the meantime, Nahuel is back in class and living at home, to save room-and-board expenses and further reduce his spring 2020 costs.
His professors feel that once his fall balance is paid, his prospects are solid. There is still his spring tuition bill to consider, but when he returns next year, he will be eligible for various scholarships designed to help students in his situation (but not available to freshmen), including the Whitewater Dream Fund. There is also a national scholarship for DACA students, which he will apply for. And he will continue to live at home.
“If my music colleagues and I can succeed in keeping him enrolled at UWW, he will have a bright future ahead of him — he works hard and he has an incredible natural talent as a singer. He’s exactly the kind of student we would want to highlight in our department, in the College of Arts and Communication, and in the university as a whole,” said one of his professors.
Please consider helping this promising young Dreamer follow his academic path and achieve his goals. Any money collected will be remitted directly to UW-Whitewater to cover his remaining fall 2019 balance. Any monies over that amount, which is $8,910, will be applied to his spring 2020 balance.
