I'm raising funds for , Ms. Vargas, who is being removed from the home she has lived in for nearly 35 years since 1991.
Ms. Vargas came from the Dominican Republic when she was just 19 after graduating college. Coming to NY she first arrived to Brownsville NY, to work in a factory because her degree wasn't valid for her in the U.S. She lived with an aunt in Brownsville projects. After a traumatic experience Ms. Vargas dreamed of somewhere peaceful with less violence. She shortly after met her first child's father, and he brought her over to Astoria, NY in 1991. She gave birth to 2 daughters in the 90s and her life remained in this same apartment.
New landlord came into ownership in 1999, raising the rent and making the building de-stabilized, risking a unfair raise in rent price, especially because with the rent increases, improvements and renovations never came. Since 1991 until 2026, Ms. Vargas even bought her own stove because the landlord refused to purchase a new one even though it was broken for almost a year. (DHCR doesn't want to fix the error they made, the judge didn't want to bother DHCR)
The conditions of this building is no secret. Online you can find information on countless violations and disturbing complaints to 311 about this building. No rights after 30* years. The council member of district 22 is aware of this issue as it was brought to their attention that house inspectors close cases with no repairs, and etc.Hopefully they will do something about it. Mamdani also has countless letters in his mail box from her household.
Today, Ms. Vargas is seeking community, to save money to live elsewhere and to have money to take to court to see if they will give her more time.
Loss of family, depression, physical disabilities and absent fathers has been the reason for Ms. Vargas instability. Shes been in the nycha and section 8 list for over 20 years and never got called for a home, not even when her children were small.
Ms. Vargas hopes to start new somewhere where she can afford to live, she hopes she can get a housing lottery in the area , an apartment or a chance to start new.
The landlord has successfully removed Ms. Vargas in a holdover case. She even worked for the landlord and has no rights or respect. Citypheps has denied Ms. Vargas, even though it would be dangerous for her not to be in a safe apartment, a shelter is not an option for her, and they denied her because no shelter experience.
Overall Ms. Vargas is a victim of gentrification, she's unable to re locate locally, so she can continue her treatment at Aristotle Psychology, and attend her local doctors that she's known all her life, at 61 Ms Vargas is at the border of having any privilege as a senior, right now she has exhausted all resources.
The money from this fundraiser will go toward the rent she needs right away so she can take it to court and have more time to find another place to live in short notice. To avoid being unhoused shes done a order to show cause.
If you are able to donate or share this fundraiser, any support would mean so much to her and her cat during this urgent time. You would be helping a community member that contributes to the community daily with her smiling and considering her neighbors and always supporting local business.
Thank you.
(She is overwhelmed with joy of your support, I edited because she is currently in court and suggested I do so, will add a thank you link if donation goal is reached.)
