In 1982, Santos Cavazos opened Mr. Santos Fashion Designs, a tailor shop specializing in wedding, prom, and other formal clothing. The shop has now served generations of customers in the Houston area, making the fine clothing that customers needed for the best moments in their lives. Santos has developed a reputation in this city by providing attention to detail, a vast understanding of fashion for men and women, and years of experience to draw on when working on unique customer requests from all levels of Houston society.
In the 38 years that the shop has been open, Santos and his seamstress Lupita have been the tailors of choice to make alterations on even the finest and most expensive suits and gowns. They have taken pride in serving the entire Houston customer base. Whether you were an executive with a priceless designer gown or a budget-conscious customer who wants quality work for the best price, Mr. Santos Fashion Design provided personal attention to your needs and did work that will last a lifetime. While the shop handles everything from men's pants and shirts to elaborate wedding gowns, Santos specializes in re-designing wedding dresses worn decades before by a cherished family member and turning them into a contemporary, elegant new dress that still pays homage to the original.
Mr. Santos Fashion Design has served the Houston area faithfully for almost 40 years. It has allowed Santos and Lupita to raise their families here and become a part of the fabric of the city. The shop has survived hurricanes, economic boom/bust cycles, and a move from its long-time Westheimer location to its current spot on Welch. Even when Houston has suffered, Mr. Santos Fashion Designs was able to persevere and provide excellent service for the people of this city.
Sadly, the Coronavirus epidemic has been an entirely new and different sort of crisis. For the first time in his company’s history, Santos is faced not with issues in supplying great clothing to customers, but instead with a complete disappearance of demand for his services. Due to the pandemic, weddings and proms are being cancelled or postponed. Employees are working from home, and don’t need suits or other formal clothing. While Santos and Lupita are still ready to serve the public, there just aren’t customers looking for tailoring right now.
Over the last seven months, Santos has had to burn through the store’s reserves to pay for overhead costs. He has applied for all of the relief programs available, and did receive one $8000 PPP loan which helped for a short time, but all other grant and loan programs have turned this small, two-person operation down. As a result, the company is finally at a point where there is no more money left to pay for the constant costs of running the business.
If you have any need for tailoring services, we first please urge you to reach out to Mr. Santos Fashion Designs. We need your business and would be happy to provide the top-notch product that our customers have come to expect. But sadly, at this point it has become apparent that there are simply not going to be formal events until there is a viable and widespread vaccine for the Coronavirus, and the only way for Santos and Lupita to keep the shop open is if they can rely on the generosity of the people of Houston. At this time, it would take about $50,000 for the business to remain open until next summer, when hopefully there will be renewed demand for fine tailoring.
