Matthew is living with one of the most devastating and heartbreaking terminal illnesses that most people have never heard of - Huntington's disease, which can be described as combining the features of Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and ALS into one deadly degenerative disorder.
I’m one of Matt’s oldest friends, and I’m organizing this fundraiser at his request because Matthew Prince needs help right now. I’ve known Matt for over 20 years.
Huntington's disease is a genetic, progressive, terminal neurodegenerative disease. It insidiously wears away at a person's ability to control movement, have clarity of thought, and keep the emotionally sound mind we all take for granted day-to-day.
People with Huntington’s are slowly ravaged by the disease until little remains of who they were. Even the body wastes away, as involuntary movements (chorea) eventually burn through calories faster than can be replaced. Lives are cut short, but the process is a withering, grueling marathon affecting every aspect of one's life.
Speech, movement, gait, sleep, eating, habits, executive function, and anxiety levels are all affected and stress makes symptoms worse.
Losing his family home in Kentucky caused his safety-net there to unravel, and Matt was forced to leave KY for GA this year after a sudden job loss on top of it. Since then, old friends, many of them far away, have stepped in where they can to help him navigate housing, paperwork, and benefits. However, overall this relocation and housing crisis is making an already difficult situation harder to manage.
Since his emergency relocation to Savannah, GA from Kentucky in February 2026, Matt has been renting a room for $750 a month. That affordable arrangement is unfortunately ending because the property is being renovated, which means he has to move out by October 31st. In Savannah, realistic housing options are in the $1,000 to $1,200 or more range. Matt’s income is about $800+ a month from SSDI, plus modest benefits for bare essentials, and what he can make up himself on the side. Section 8 waiting lists are full and exceptionally long. With time running out, he will need money for a security deposit on his new place soon, and help to buffer the difference in rent for the immediate future. This ordeal is not just stressful, it puts him at risk.
This fund will help cover expenses for:
- A security deposit for a new place
- The difference a higher monthly will require
- Out-of-pocket costs not fully covered by benefits
We're hoping that there will be promise with AMT-130 trials and new genetic research available soon, but he needs help now.
Matt is still here and fighting. If you are able to give, any amount eases the immediate pressure of this move and helps keep him housed. Recurring donations would provide more predictable support for his ongoing rent gap and day-to-day needs as he lives with Huntington’s disease, and one-time donations are deeply appreciated too. Anything helps as we try to navigate an extremely cruel situation. If you cannot donate, sharing this fundraiser still matters more than you know. Thank you for showing up for Matt when it counts and feel free to message me on FB for more details if we're friends.
