Morning Glory Cafe was established in 1985 by Maria Ruiz, a local icon known for her healing food, wisdom, and humor. Maria believed food is medicine, and her passion for organic, whole-foods cuisine nourished the community. She was devoted to using simple, high-quality ingredients to create healthy versions of her family's New Mexico recipes, like blue corn tamales and red chile. A visionary, Maria was an early advocate for hemp seed, inventing Morning Glory’s Hemp Burger in 1990. Her cozy kitchen made everyone feel at home, and each plate was served with wit and compassion. The love she put into her food continues to ripple throughout the community today.
Jewels Livingstone, who worked for Maria for over 15 years, now carries on her tradition. "Her family entrusted me with her legacy when she died in September of 2009," says Jewels. "I am honored to continue Morning Glory’s tradition of providing delicious and nourishing food made from the highest quality ingredients in a safe and inclusive space."
Our Commitment to Sustainability
At Morning Glory Cafe, we believe in nurturing both our community and the planet. Our commitment to being 100% plant-based significantly reduces our carbon footprint. By shopping locally, recycling, and composting, we produce less than a single household’s worth of trash each week. To maintain high quality and reduce food waste, we cook in small batches. All food scraps are composted and used to fertilize our on-site organic garden. We also partner with local growers and use collected greywater to maintain our landscaping.
All donations will go to much-needed repairs, maintenance, and upgrades.
Thank you for supporting our local, sustainable small business.
As Maria would say,
"Peace, Love, and 10,000 times 10,000 Blessings."
