Emergency Freezer Replacement Needed to Keep Mama Bird’s Open
For the past 10 years, Mama Bird’s Ice Cream Shop has been more than just a place to grab dessert — it has been a gathering spot for families, a first job for local students, and a place where memories are made one scoop at a time. We are incredibly proud to be part of this community, and we are deeply grateful for the support you have shown us over the years.
Mama Bird’s is especially meaningful to our family. The name “Mama Bird’s” comes from our daughters’ nicknames and represents the heart of our family and the love that inspired us to build this business. Our children have grown up in this shop, spending their childhood helping behind the counter, learning responsibility, and becoming part of the community that has supported us.
This business represents years of hard work, sacrifice, and love from our family. My husband proudly serves this community as a local firefighter, and giving back has always been at the heart of who we are. We love this town deeply — it’s where we’ve raised our children, built our livelihood, and formed lifelong connections. This community isn’t just where we work; it’s truly our home.
Today, we are facing one of the biggest challenges in our shop’s history.
Our walk-in freezer — the heart of our operation — has failed and must be replaced. Without it, we cannot safely store ice cream or ingredients, which puts our ability to stay open at serious risk. In addition to the equipment failure, we lost over **$10,000 worth of product** that was stored inside the freezer when it went down, which has placed an additional financial strain on our business. After receiving professional estimates, the cost to replace the freezer is approximately **$15,000**, creating a total financial impact of more than **$25,000** for our small business.
Like many small businesses, we have faced rising costs and unexpected challenges over the past few years. This sudden equipment failure and product loss have created an urgent financial need that is difficult for us to overcome alone.
We are reaching out to our community — the people who have supported us, celebrated birthdays with us, brought their kids in for after-school treats, and made us part of their traditions. Your donation will go directly toward replacing our walk-in freezer and helping us remain open, preserve local jobs, and continue serving the customers who have become like family to us.
We want Mama Bird’s to continue being what it has been for the past 10 years — a place filled with laughter, milestones, and memories that families carry with them long after the last scoop is gone. We’ve watched children grow up here, friendships form over milkshakes, and young teens nervously start their very first jobs, gaining confidence and life lessons that stay with them forever. This shop has been part of so many stories, including our own family’s, and it means everything to us to keep those memories and opportunities alive for future generations.
Every contribution, no matter the size, makes a meaningful difference. Even if you are unable to donate, sharing this campaign helps tremendously.
To show our appreciation, once the freezer is replaced, we plan to host a Community Thank You Celebration to celebrate with everyone who helped keep us going.
Running Mama Bird’s has been our passion and our livelihood for a decade. With your help, we hope to continue serving smiles, scoops, and sweet memories for many years to come.
Thank you for believing in small businesses and in Mama Bird’s.
With gratitude,
Nick and Lesley Richmond
