"Ah, hello, my good and dear friends. Come, come, sit. Let us talk. Tell me your story, let me tell mine. It is good to have friends, is it not? Even if only for a short time." *Ambassador Londo Mollari, Babylon 5, played by Peter Jurasik. (The kitten is named for that character.)

A year ago Feb 9th, my partner was fired for no particular reason. I also work in a job I like which pays reasonably well and have for five years. A third of my net pay goes toward insurance premiums because one of our kids is a type 1 diabetic and needs insulin. We scrabbled and scratched and begged to barely keep the lights on after exhausting our savings and credit. Even fast food and grocery places wouldn't hire him, for being ‘overqualified’. He finally managed to get another job 5 months later and is working hard.

We thought we were catching up on bills. We were wrong. We were so very wrong. We had set up a payment plan with the bank holding our mortgage. We were receiving monthly notifications from our bank that it was being paid. Due to an incident back in 2005, I've been having panic attacks and had told him that I was trusting him to check and make sure everything was paid. He reassured me. He called the bank holding the mortgage two weeks ago to make sure we were properly on the payment plan, and they said we were.

They didn't tell us that they had turned off the autopay on their side. They didn't tell us the mortgage was late at all. They certainly didn't tell us that they required us to be paying with a certified check instead of online autopay at any point when we set up the payment plan in the first place.

We had food and insulin and other bills to pay, bills to catch up on. We trusted what we were told two weeks ago. And the cost of insulin and other meds adds up in the second half of the year. He didn't tell me he was having the same problem with panic attacks until the start of foreclosure proceedings notice arrived via certified mail. Nearly a year to the day after his previous employer started this whole rollercoaster of financial hell by terminating his employment with no notice and one paycheck of severance.

We're already making calls to lawyers, looking at bankruptcy options, and applying for second jobs that, frankly, I can't actually do long-term due to half a dozen health conditions. We made mistakes. And that means we're going to need help to stay in our house. We can't be homeless - we have a kid whose meds must be refrigerated. We have an autistic kid. We have dogs and cats, Londo being one of them. Our credit is trashed from 5 months on one income - we can't rent a place big enough for our family of six humans, much less the animals, for less than 500 more than our normal mortgage payment. And that's with only three bedrooms, it'd require us to have our daughter sleep in the same room as one of the boys.

We’re doing everything we can to stop living our worst nightmare for the second time. Please help us.
